This is Mark Twain's imaginative series of diary entries by Adam and Eve. At first, Adam is puzzled by this new arrival, Eve, in the garden, and he is suspicious of her disturbing appetite for fruit. Eve, believing herself to be some sort of experiment, is curious about another experiment in the garden,

The first half of this short book was absolutely excellent. Eve is a free spirit determined to enjoy and bring order to the wonderful Garden of Eden. Adam is a curmudgeonly misogynist who thinks Eve talks too much and should give all this naming of animals and plants a rest.

The second half of this book is throw-across-the-room frustrating and annoying. The scales fall from their eyes, Eve fancies Adam like mad and falls in love with him. They marry and forever after she subsumes her individuali

Expulsion from The Garden of Eden, Reinterpreted

We take upon ourselves the power of Judgment, without the power of Discernment. This is the message of the Expulsion story:

Consider Hobbes' discussion of Genesis:

"[We can look at] “You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”(Genesis, 3. 5) And, “Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee thou shouldest not eat?”(Genesis, 3. 11)

For the cognizance or judicature of good and evil, being forbidden by th

Just what I needed right now, a humorous book about the world's oldest couple. Seems like men and women had trouble understanding each other from the very beginning. Go figure.

From Adam's diary. "She has now taken up with a snake. The other animals are glad, for she was always experimenting with them and bothering them; and I am glad, because the snake talks, and this enables me tot get a rest. She says the snake advises her try the fruit of that tree.I advised her to keep away from the tree. Sh

***NO SPOILERS***

No fan of Mark Twain’s work--religious and non-religious alike--should overlook this slim masterpiece, a very creative, and most of all, hilarious peek into the minds and lives of Adam and Eve during their first days. The narrative is organized as half Adam’s diary and half Eve’s. The tones are sharply distinct, and there’s no mistaking whose is whose. Adam’s is a straightforward, puzzled, and sometimes cranky daily accounting of the day’s accomplishments and discoveries. Adam s

I listened to an audiobook narrated by Adam (Walter Zimmerman) and Eve (Cindy Hardin). It is only 1hr 8min long. Give yourself a treat. You will chuckle through the whole thing.

One of the funniest things I have heard in a long, long time. Everybody needs to laugh.

What's it about? Well, do any woman or mans see eye to eye on anything? We are different; let's just admit it. We of the feminine sex talk......and talk and talk and talk. To us something is important just for its beauty. And the men,

This was boring. A pointless compilation of the stories Twain wrote that reference Adam and Eve, i.e. a few fragments alongside the amusing ‘The Diary of Adam and Eve’ that barely fills half this micro-offering. Oneworld Classics (now Alma Classics) are exemplary in bringing lesser-known classics into the public awareness, but cobbling together scraps from the Twain table and publishing them with a sexy cover is not shrewd business (specially since Twain is as sexy as sticky toffee pudd’n).

Oh, dios!

What did they really think about each other and their situation in the garden? Mark Twain gives us his version of this most interesting question; peppered with humor but not preachy.

While Twain plays on and derives humor from some familiar gender stereotypes, this is in no way a one-joke piece. If anything, the book’s “gimmick”--the translation of previously undiscovered texts direct from the Garden of Eden--provides it with the fuel for genius. The man and the woman, while playing their traditional, stereotypical roles to perfection, also happen to be the first of their sexes. As a result, Adam and Eve are able to play out the battle of the sexes unhampered by the cultural ...more
